About this experience

Are you interested in learning about the legacy of our Africans ancestor in the Cuban Culture? Are you ready to witness the influence of Afro Cuban Religions in the daily life of the Cuba? Then this experience is a MUST for you! We will meet at Beyond Roots headquarter in Old Havana to share a cup of coffee and get to know each other. We´ll travel to Guanabacoa, the cradle of Afro-Cuban culture in Havana, specifically to the house of a “Babalawo”--the highest priest of Santeria. He will cleanse us at his altar and explain us the main Afro-Cuban religions and also how he looks into people’s future and gives advice . We will enjoy typical Afro-Cuban food and relax under the shadow of a sacred Ceiba tree listening to emblematic music played by members of the community, while we taste a cup of Aguardiente. After that we´ll go back to Beyond Roots store, the first and only Afro style shop in Cuba, having the opportunity to visit an space dedicated to highlighting the Afro identity in the island. You will come as a guest but you will leave being part of the community.

We are the founders of Beyond Roots, a project focused on providing an immersion in Afro Cuban Culture through your five senses. Growing up in Guanabacoa, we were raised under the living legacy of our African ancestors. Now we have an authentic passion for educating people about this misunderstood topic. We want to share with you the feeling of our community, transmit you a knowledge that has been passed through generations and show you its influence in the daily life of the Cubans from different perspectives. In this particular experience we'll do it through the flavors of our unique cuisine.

Location

After meeting at Beyond Roots Store in Old Havana, we will travel to Guanabacoa town, cradle of Afro Cuban Culture in Havana. There we will visit the house of a Babalawo where we host most of the religious activities and also the local parties. It's a perfect opportunity for having a first hand contact with this culture since we are going to cook together as we usually do in special days, using traditional ingredients from the slaves' time.
